Echoes of War

The Campo Santo Cemetery in the Gentian suburb of Sint-Amandsberg sits as a reminder of the horrors of war. Its main section contains old stone graves of people who fell during the Great War (World War I), both soldiers and civilians. The air is thick with history and grief, and a heavy silence settles over grassy paths that wind between the dead.

From between the crosses and rotting Christ effigies, a stone soldier extends a hand across the century, a painful reminder of the lessons that we never seem to learn.
